Two of the most famous diamonds on display in the Moscow Kremlin are not actually Russian diamonds. They were actually brought into Russia during the pre-20th century Tsarist regime.

A French soldier stumbled across it and spent many years converting to Hinduism so that he could get close enough to the diamond to steal it. Once his mission was accomplished, he escaped and sold the diamond to a British sailor, who took it back to England and sold it on.

The second famous diamond on display in the Kremlin is the Shah diamond, which is also from India. This diamond also has a fascinating back story. It was taken from India to Persia in the 18th century, where it became the property of Nadir Shah. However, one hundred years later, a Russian diplomat was murdered in Persia. The Russian government, which was far more powerful than Persia’s, demanded that the diamond be handed over instead, to prevent a diplomatic incident.
