In Defense of Cheap Electric Guitars
I must confess a bit of a guilty pleasure: I'm a sucker for cool guitar straps. While there's very little excuse for owning a greater number of guitar straps than guitars, that's the situation into which I've impulse-bought. Guitar straps are to me as pairs of shoes are to my fairer half: gratuitously abundant, and always multiplying. But I can't seem to help myself, as every time I walk past the guitar strap rack at the guitar center, a new strap seems to call like a siren.
I've actually reduced gratuitous guitar strap buying down to a bit of a science. You can usually locate cool guitar straps live and in person at your local music store, write down the manufacturer and model number, then go back home to hop on your computer. You can often find the same guitar strap online for a great deal cheaper. It's not always true that buying online reaps big savings, but it's true often enough in the music products genre to have made me a believer in online commerce.
In fact, it's not just guitar straps that I've taken to buying on the internet. I recently finished a total guitar overhaul and customization project using only parts I bought online. While I had to return a couple of parts due to faulty measurements (which was my mistake, not theirs, as it turned out), I otherwise had no trouble whatsoever, other than my natural impatience waiting for the parts shipments to arrive. I was actually able to locate a tough-to-find item on the internet (a chrome-finished humbucker guitar pickup) that I couldn't find in any music store, which was the perfect finish to my Stratocaster customization.
There is one key item that you should only buy in person, however, and that's your guitar itself. Whether you're looking for $5,000 luthier masterpieces or everyday cheap electric guitars, you should never buy any instrument you haven't played in person. It pays to make sure your new guitar feels and sounds right before you flash cash.
