Evolution of Basketball
The off-season is over and which team came out the winner in the NBA free agent sweepstakes? No other than the Miami Heat. With Lebron James and Chris Bosh bolting the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Toronto Raptors respectively to join Dwayne Wade, the Miami Heat is the clear favorite to win it all this season. The triumvirate of superstars makes other ball club owners cringe in envy.
Truly, basketball has a new world order and the Miami Heat ball club is enjoying its place in the top of the heap. The team has seemed to monopolize the league. People really miss the times wherein most teams in the league were competitive with each other and most stars were loyal to their teams and aligned themselves with players who they enjoy playing with irregardless of the paycheck they receive. With the signing of Lebron James, Chris Bosh and old Miami stalwart Dwayne Wade, the team has altered the healthy balance of the league.
Only the defending champions Los Angeles Lakers and the old reliable Boston Celtics seem to have the chance at making a game interesting with the Miami Heat. Not that we don’t enjoy an all-star ensemble of a team play ball, this might be just reminiscent of the Harlem Globetrotters team making fun of their foes with insurmountable blow-out scores. While it might be fun at first, the games will lose its competitive nature and might turn-off the die hard fans who would prefer a close match over a team spanking the other.
Basketball really have evolved. From the short shorts to the underhand free throws to the crossover dribble and the powerful dunks, it still appeals to troves of fans as they follow their favorite players and teams strut their wares on the hard court. As for me, I miss the defensive-minded plays that made the Detroit Pistons and the New York Knicks infamous during the 80’s and 90’s. I don’t know about you but for me, defense definitely wins championships.
