Other beaches on the west coast such as Tanote Bay and Sai Daeng have a less discovered feel than many of the beaches on Koh Phangan. There are more basic wooden bungalows that cost just a few dollars a night left on Koh Tao.

In contrast Koh Phangan has greatly improved its roads and other infrastructure. Although some beaches such as Than Sadet and Haad Thian (East) remain hard to get to they are more on the beaten track nowadays. As a consequence, much of the accommodation on Koh Phangan has been upgraded to cater for higher paying tourists.

Finally, Koh Phangan with its closer proximity to Koh Samui remains easier to get to than Koh Tao. The good news, however, it that the two islands are connected by regular ferry services which means that you can always change your mind easily if you arrive on one island only to discover that maybe you should have chosen the other.

Koh Phangan is an island covering 167 square kilometers. It is 90% covered with virgin tropical forest and has over 20 beautiful beaches. The attraction for high end tourism is the unspoiled scenery of the island and the stunning white sand beaches.

There is still a lot that people are missing when it comes to Koh Phangan. It is an island rich in culture and nature. There are over 20 temples on the island. The oldest is Wat Phu Khao Noi on a hill near Thongsala. There is also the famous temple of Wat Pho in Bantai where the monks still prepare natural herbal steam saunas. In the north west of the island there is a Chinese Temple built on a hill. It has a spectacular view and was built as a result of a vision that a Mrs. Malawan had.

There is a series of waterfalls near Than Sadet beach where 3 Kings of Thailand have carved their initials on the rocks. There is the trek to the top of Khao Ra, Koh Phangan’s highest peak that passes a waterfall.

On the west coast there are extensive coral reefs teaming with marine life that are easily accessed from such beaches as Haad Yao, Haad Thian and Haad Salad.

Koh Phangan also offers great opportunities for mountain bike riding and for trekking. It is an island that has preserved its bio-diversity. It is also a place where fishermen still go out on their traditional longtail boats and where the coconut industry still thrives. There are still many original buildings to be seen in Chaloklum and Bantai villages.

If you look carefully you can find the real Koh Phangan. It might be a holiday place and a place to party but it is also an island with its own traditions and culture that reward those who make an effort to learn more about Koh Phangan.
