Backpacking Australia - Visiting Sydney

The Sydney Opera House competes with Melbourne's Arts Centre for attention in the Australian public respect. The Opera House is a performing arts centre with multiple places to have concerts.

The Opera House is built on a small peninsula of land sticking out into the Sydney Harbour so it looks like it is floating on the water when viewed from a distance. Right next door is downtown Sydney and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

Their program is huge and it is worth checking in advance before you're backpacking Australia to see if you can time your time spent there with any of the events. About 1.2 million people visit the Opera House every year and it's quite affordable for tourists. There are tours to see the various venues during the day and of course at night you can go and see some of the shows.

All styles are catered for and there's bound to be something you like when you're traveling through Sydney.

Different venues

The Opera House has 7 main areas for shows. The Concert Hall has almost 3,000 seats and is the largest room where the Sydney Symphony play. The Opera Theatre holds 1,500 people and is home to the Australian Ballet. The Drama Theatre has 500 chairs and is mostly used by the Sydney Theatre Company as well as some dance groups.

There is also a Playhouse, Studio and Forecourt, the latter being an open air theatre.

Et cetera.

Other places in the Sydney Opera House include a recording studio, cafes, restaurants, bars and even stores. There are guided tours and even backstage tours through which backpackers can meet some of the stars of the shows.

History

If you're visiting Sydney and the Opera House, don't forget to pay attention to some of the history so you can tell your friends and relatives all about it when you get home. The Opera House was designed in the 1950s by a Danish architect and he won many prizes for his unique and beautiful design.

His project took almost 30 years to come to complete fruition. The building was designed in the 1950s and was finally finished in 1973 ready for the public. It was also constructed in three distinct stages - the podium, the roof and the interior.

The final construction cost $102 million, although its original budget was something in the vicinity of $7 million. It was completed 10 years late and vastly over budget.

The building has not just been used for performance arts, during the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games many of the track and field events were held there or in the Botanic Gardens next door.

To find the car rentals at the airport, you should be either at Terminal 2 and 3, which is the international section, or at Terminal 1 that is the domestic section. All the big car rental agencies are located in these terminals. Look out for signage that says car rentals once you have gone through all the necessary checkpoints.

Naturally, you can also hire a vehicle down town. Many rentals are available for hire at the Main Station. You will also find agencies at Tivoli Garden or at the Town Hall Square. If you get lost, just ask someone where the car rental agencies are and they will quickly direct you.

If you do not want to follow these options, ask your hotel to book at car on your behalf. They usually know where their best deals are and will quickly be of service to you.

The Danes prefer to drive smaller cars, but of course they have bigger ones if you so prefer. You can get anything from Jaguars to Mercedes-Benz, but you will probably not find many American models. No matter what your fancy is, you will get a super deal and a great vehicle when you rent a car in Copenhagen.

They will be intimidating at first, but you will find that as you attempt to learn and learn vocabulary and grammar, the wall of indistinguishable text will quickly start to make more sense. So place yourself in Japan, surround yourself with a world of Japanese erasers, get excited about some Japanese television shows, and you'll find yourself understanding more and more before you know it.

You can add a casual dress and sandals on the list too. This is enough for almost any trip, especially if you are able to do some laundry while traveling. Try it!
