Space Wolves are technology based characters that are armed to the teeth with the latest pulverizing weaponry and a suit of armor that protects the Wolves from destruction. They are known for their anti-authoritarian behavior, and they are organized into packs rather than normal squads. They are known for being ill disciplined and fearless.

Youths are recruited to become Space Wolves and are chosen from the most physically fit youths in their home world of Fenris. In order to be chosen for the training camp, the youth must display their heroism, through action or death in fierce battles. Once chosen, the Space Wolves candidates are taken to camps and assigned to groups called Claws. During an unspecified time frame, the young warriors struggle through intense physical training and near fatal missions.

When the candidates are proclaimed worthy and fit for combat, they receive the spirit of the Wolf, or Canis Helix. They are taken to the Gate of Morkai where their mind is probed and picked by the Chapter’s psychic Rune Priests. If they pass this test, they become a fully chartered member of the Emperors Chosen Ones. They will enter a trial period before being transformed into a fully fledged Space Wolf. Some will become the Space Wolf while others morph into blood thirsty and mutant creatures called Wulfens.

Those that pass the transformation process will have to endure one final test. The candidate will be given a dagger and spear and brave the waste lands of Fenris and find his way back to the Fang, which is the Space Wolves fortress-monastery. Using any means necessary, they must survive the arctic tundra. Upon successful completion of the tests, the newly ordained Space Wolf is presented with the ancient Power Armor of a fallen Wolf-Brother. He is then welcomed into one of the twelve great Companies.
