Are Your Credit Cards Ready For Thanksgiving?
If you have ever stood in a shop and had your credit card refused you will know how embarrassing it is but during the day after thanksgiving sales it is even worse as the offer won't be there again next week when you get the card issue worked out.
All too often card problems aren't actually down to there not being enough money available. When there is a suspicious purchase on your card the company security dept will call you to discuss it with you. If you have changed your phone number and not told your credit card company they could well get a dead line or even worse someone else!
This would be enough for them to stop your card while they investigate further. I had my home phone number listed everywhere and then we had our home phone disconnected as we never heard from anyone apart from telemarketers and political robocalls. This meant that when the credit card security dept called they got a dead line.
It doesn't matter whether you are buying a 3d tv or duvet covers you still don't want to have to put it back on the shelf while you go and sort things out. Since you know when the sales are happening you have plenty of time to contact your credit card company and make sure they have the right phone number for you.
The next thing to consider is what is your credit card limit and how close you are to it. If you get your card refused due to a wrong phone number that is different to having it refused because you are over the limit. It can be tempting to extent the limit as the sales get near, but can you really afford to do that?
Only you know how much you are struggling to make the payment every month and if that payment increases then will it put further stress on your family finances? It is nice to be able to sit down and watch a huge TV but if you can't afford to pay the electricity bill to run it then it is kind of pointless.
Remember that credit cards are not free money, you still have to pay it back, so don't go crazy spending money you can't afford to pay back when the bill comes in.
